Harold Holzer moderated a panel discussion on how President Lincoln’s opposition to slavery while respecting its protection by the Constitution put him at odds with both Southern slaveholders and Northern abolitionists. They focused on how his views on slavery and race evolved from the antebellum years through the Civil War. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience. Mr. Holzer also made opening remarks for the conference, followed by George Buss portraying President Lincoln as if reading a portion of his 1862 Annual Message to Congress.
“Lincoln Evolves -- The Slavery Issue” was the first session of “Lincoln & Emancipation: An Anniversary Symposium,"which was part of "The Lincoln Series” at the New York Historical Society. The all-day conference on Saturday January 23, 2010, marked the 147th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863.
