Yale University Professor David Blight on why the Civil War is still important to Americans (The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney)

David W. Blight is an expert on the US Civil War. He discusses how Americans differ in their perception of the war. Will this change in the presence of an African-American president? How will the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the war differ from the 100th anniversary in 1961?

David W. Blight is a Yale University professor, author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory (2001), and Director, Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University.

Professor Blight was a guest of the United States Studies Centre and the University of Sydney's History Department in July 2009.
